Backyard Birds

Linda Baker, Jean Catino, June Coha, Larry Prather, and Linc Russin

Saturday, April 27th, 7.00pm (doors@6.30pm) $25 adv / $28

Backyard Birds performs a wide range of music, from Americana, country, pop and soul to a sprinkling of jazz standards and originals, in a fresh blend of three-part female vocal harmony and acoustic arrangements. Linda Baker (vocals, acoustic electric guitar), Jean Catino (vocals, tenor ukulele), June Coha (vocals, soprano ukulele), Larry Prather(bass) and Linc Russin (mandolin) love to rediscover and "uncover" great, overlooked songs. The three women's close-knit harmony singing, Russin's cool mando solos, Prather's expressive bass lines, and the band's eclectic material have drawn comparisons to the music of Rosanne Cash and the T Sisters.

Backyard Birds shows often include songs they love by Carlene Carter, Anna McGarrigle, First Aid Kit, Imelda May, the Zombies, Leonard Cohen, Sam Phillips, and the Beatles, among many more, always with new polish on gems they have lovingly rescued from the deep "forgotten song" pile.

Dale Ockerman & Stuart Wilson · String Keys Coincidence , Sat 4/6, 7-9p, $20

“String Keys Coincidence” is keyboardist Dale Ockerman, and violinist Stuart Wilson. If you’ve seen the White Album Ensemble do their post- tour era Beatles albums performed live, with strings ( the quartet has been led by Stu the last few years) and horns. Dale has been the keyboard player (and one of the guitarists)
Dale has been a veteran of the Santa Cruz music scene since 1969 - jamming with guys from Moby Grape, then playing with SF legends Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1971 ( “TheLast Days Of The Fillmore” Film and Album). The seventies were a fun romp through these bands and artists IAM, Snail, Airtight, Soquel, The Ducks, Bill Champlin, Rita Coolidge.
Local performing led to a musical collaboration with Patrick Simmons, of the Doobie Brothers in 1983, for a Japan and US tour, then their 1989 reunion, co-writing 4 songs on 10 albums ( including the boxed set), and touring till 1996.
After that, Dale played with Zig Modeliste (Legendary Meters drummer) and other New Orleans R and B/ Funk acts, like the Wild Magnolias, headlining the NOLA Jazz fest; and Cyril Neville
Part of the WAE’s charm was performing with the Santa Cruz Symphony, for a series of concerts, bringing in guest vocalist like Tammi Brown, James Durbin ( James was the first Scholarship recipient at Dale’s “Musicscool” ). The “unplugged Beatles” WAE concerts at the Kuumbwa were another influence that led to this instrumental duo.
Stuart is a classically trained violinist with experience in rock, jazz and theater; has performed in the SF Bay Area with favorites WAE, Black Sunday Roadshow, Diminished Blue, and Bitter Mystics as well as performances at the Jewel Theater, Cabrillo Stage, Los Gatos Old Town Theater. He has an aerospace- engineering background, is holder of 6 patents, and is creator of numerous successful start ups, moved to Santa Cruz, to create a recording studio, engineering and pursuing applying his own musical talents.
They enjoyed playing the Beatles gigs together, and did some recording together at Stu’s studio in Seascape, and found a common love of New Orleans music, vintage jazz like Duke Ellington.
Deciding to have some fun, an instrumental duo was hatched, starting with Beatles tunes, then some Stephane Grappelli with Django Reinhard- and thought, “lets do an imaginary dream duo of Dr John, and Stefan, maybe playing Beatles and Queen and Ellington”!

An Evening of Eastern European Village Music

Saturday, Mar 30th, 7.00pm (doors@6.30pm) $25 adv / $28

Join Zoë Aqua (violin), Dmitri Gaskin (accordion) and Raffi Boden (cello) for an evening of traditional village music from three unique Eastern European Cultures: Transylvanian, Polish, and Ashkenazic Jewish. The three musicians have devoted their careers to mastering the music of these cultures. We will travel on a journey from village to village across the Carpathian Mountains, hearing the music each region has to offer, and also feature a number of the group's original compositions in these styles.

Zoë Aqua (violin) recently completed a 2-year stint in Cluj, Romania on a Fulbright studying Transylvanian folk music. While there she recorded the album In Vald Arayn- new compositions inspired by traditional music, developed in collaboration with Romanian and Hungarian musicians.

Dmitri Gaskin (accordion) performs around the world with Yiddish singer Anthony Russell in the duo Tsvey Brider, most recently in a program of Black and Jewish music with the Louisville Orchestra. Tsvey Brider released their album Kosmopolitn in 2022.

Raffi Boden (cello) combines his instrumental fluency with a reverence for folk traditions. Since graduating from Juilliard, Raffi has performed in ensembles from experimental chamber trios to raucous klezmer big bands in venues ranging from intimate neighborhood haunts to Carnegie Hall.

Roy Zimmerman

Saturday Mar 23, 7pm doors at 6:30, $35/30

Roy Zimmerman’s signature blend of heart and hilarity has never been more necessary. In a career spanning more than thirty years, Roy’s songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime, and his videos have garnered hundreds of millions of views. Roy co-writes these songs with his wife Melanie Harby. Their song parody “Vote Him Away (The Liar Tweets Tonight)” has had over 140 million views online.  Together, they have produced eleven albums of tuneful satire. The latest release is THIS MACHINE: THE BEST OF ROY ZIMMERMAN, a double album featuring 25 songs from Roy’s 25 years as a solo artist.

Joni Mitchell says, “Roy’s lyrics move beyond poetry and achieve perfection.”  The Los Angeles Times says, “Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society’s foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer.” Tom Lehrer says, “I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs.” Roy has shared stages with a vast variety of musical and comedic luminaries – Robin Williams, Black Francis, Ellen DeGeneres, Arlo Guthrie, Bill Maher, Holly Near, John Oliver, The Roches, George Carlin. Roy founded and wrote all the material for the comedy folk quartet The Foremen. The Foremen brought to the Nineties what Folk Era groups like The Limeliters and The Kingston Trio brought to the early Sixties: twangling instruments, knife-edged four-part harmonies and biting, hilarious satire.

The Foremen recorded two albums for Warner/Reprise Records. They toured extensively, playing the nation’s major folk venues, a lot of fancy Progressive benefits, Pete Seeger’s Clearwater Festival (under an overpass in the rain) and CBGB.   Melanie is three-time West Coast bluegrass guitar champion. She was an original Broadway cast member of Quilters, and performed the show at regional theaters across the country. Melanie was Joni Mitchell’s guitar tech and her research assistant on the Hits and Misses project. She was also research assistant for the Fox Movie Channel’s Legacy series with Tom Rothman, reconstructing how the deals and casting decisions were made for many classic 20th Century Fox films. Melanie co-directed a documentary of the life of Anita O’Day, The Jezebel of Jazz, and Roy and Melanie co-wrote Anita’s last song with her, “No Man of My Own.”

Roy and Melanie have written hundreds of children’s songs for Disney, Warner Bros. Looney Tunes, and McGraw and Hill. Melanie’s children’s picture book All Aboard for Dreamland is published by Simon and Schuster. By far, Roy and Melanie’s best collaborations are their sons Joe and Sam. Roy and Melanie have toured every inch of this country. Their Satire Delivery Service brings laughter and encouragement to the “Blue Dots” – the most progressive people in some of the least progressive places in the nation. “I get accused of preaching to the converted,” says Roy, “but that’s not how I think of it. I think of it as entertaining the troops.”

Max Gomez

Saturday Feb 24, 7pm doors at 6:30, $35/30

Max Gomez is an American singer-songwriter and musician based in Taos, New Mexico and has been compared to John Prine and Jackson Browne because of his seasoned blend of folk and Americana.

As a child, Gomez was influenced by the country and blues sounds of Big Bill Broonzy and Johnny Cash. After getting a guitar as a Christmas present when he was 10 years old, Gomez started performing in local bars throughout New Mexico. Gomez caught the eye of  folk-rocker Shawn Mullins after sending Mullins some of his music. The two soon collaborated, co-writing a handful of songs that would appear on Mullins’ next two albums, and touring throughout the U.S. together as young Gomez built up a fan base opening for the musical veteran.

Gomez is approaching a long-awaited new music release. He has won audiences over through his previous recordings, 2013’s Rule The World and his 2017 EP Me & Joe, in addition to covers of timeless standards like Key To The Highway and He Was A Friend Of Mine. With evocative folk-influenced tracks such as Make It Me, Run From You, and What It Means, Gomez has continued to show his depth of ability as a singer-songwriter and storyteller.

Over the years, Gomez has collaborated with numerous music luminaries, and in late 2022, Gomez was the supporting act for several shows of Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp’s North American tour, which he calls “a memorable and inspiring experience.”

So, what do you get when you mix three current Sidesaddlemembers, one past Sidesaddle member, and one talented new friend? Introducing the Goat Hill Girls. It is this mixture of old friends and new friends that come together in an earthy, down home, fun loving, bluegrass and old-time sound.

The Goat Hill Girls feature the sweet and inspired fiddle playing of Lee Anne Welch, the creative and compelling banjo playing of Sonia Shell, the robust and sincere mandolin playing of Kim Elking, the vital and solid bass playing of Lisa Burns and the clever and personable guitar playing of Linda Maki. Fiddling Cricket, Canyon Acoustic Society, & The Ugly Mug Present

Peppino D’Agostino

Friday January 26th, 7pm • $28/25

A native of Italy, D'Agostino has made his considerable international mark as a musical artist on the guitar since he arrived in America 35 years ago. In 2017 Guitar Player listed him as one of the 50 transcendent superheroes of the acoustic guitar. The CD, Every Step of The Way, was awarded by Acoustic Guitar's People's Choice Awards with a Bronze medal for Best Acoustic Album of All Time. He first played for Fiddling Cricket more than 25 years ago and we are honored to have him play now.

Peppino and his wife Donna are the founders of the Music World Retreats, where they host music workshops across the globe and partner with some of today's best instrumentalists and songwriters.

To date, Peppino has recorded 19 CD's, performed in over thirty-five countries at international festivals and concert halls. He has shared the stage with such greats as Larry Carlton, Tommy Emmanuel, Leo Kottke, Martin Taylor, and many more.

D'Agostino plays steel-string guitar with virtuosity and complexity…Influences are as far-flung as the flamenco work of Paco de Lucia and the pop sensibility of the Beatles, evident in the songs he's written, which brim with memorable melodies. -Chicago Tribune
